Remembrance Day dawned clear and cold in the capital.
With temperatures in the -11 C range, and a significant windchill factor, weather observers were saying it was one of the coldest Nov. 11 on record.
But the temperatures moderated and the scene was crisp and clear as the crowds came to honour the fallen at Canada’s National War Memorial.
Thousands were on hand, many of them in their 80s and some of them in their 90s, to greet Canada’s new Commander-in-Chief, Gov. Gen. Julie Payette, wearing the uniform of the Royal Canadian Air Force. She was accompanied by Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, representing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is attending the APEC leaders summit in Vietnam, where he will attend a ceremony of remembrance.
Payette, a former astronaut, said she had military members in her family and went into space with members of the military, including friends who died in service to their country.
“I know first-hand what sacrifice means,” she said.
“We have a duty to remember the stories of Canadians who valiantly fought for our freedoms.”
Veterans Affairs Minister Seamus O’Regan and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan, were the chief government representatives.

There were representatives of many national groups and organizations, including National Chief Perry Bellegarde of the Assembly of First Nations, leading a contingent of First Nations veterans.
A pair of low-flying CF-18s roared overhead during the ceremonies, drawing gasps from the crowd.
Later, Payette hosted a luncheon in honour of this year’s national Silver Cross Mother, Diana Abel, who lost her son, Cpl. Michael David Abel, while serving in Somalia in 1993.
This year also marks the centennial of two famous battles: the Battle of Passchendaele, which ended on Nov. 10, 1917 after some 4,000 Canadians were killed; and the Battle of Vimy Ridge, which saw nearly 3,600 Canadians killed. It is also the 75th anniversary of the Second World War’s famed Dieppe Raid.
Police said Friday there would be heightened police presence around the memorial as a precaution, but later reported no incidents.
Ceremonies were also held in towns and cities around Ottawa. First responders in Kingston were called to attend to a number of people who were affected by the cold in Kingston.
There were no serious injuries reported.
