More than 2,000 homes in Aylmer were placed under a tap water advisory Tuesday after workers detected the smell of heavy oil in the water supply.

Jean Boileau, director of communications for the City of Gatineau, said the water in the affected area is now being tested to determine if it presents a health danger.

“As a preventive measure, we went ahead with the water advisory,” said Boileau. “Presently, we’re on stand-by, waiting for tests from the lab to see if we’re going to be able to lift the advisory.”

Boileau said workers were doing planned maintenance on the city’s water supply system when the smell was detected.

A rinsing operation was underway to clear the water system.

The city imposed a complete ban on the consumption of tap water, and advised it should not be used for cooking, dishes, washing or brushing teeth.

Gatineau was handing out bottled water at the Paul Pelletier Aquatic Centre on Chemin d’Aylmer, and was also making showers available there until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The affected area is bounded by Chemin Eardley, Boulevard des Allumettières and Rue Broad, Rue Bagot, Rue Gordon and Rue North.
