A driver has been charged after colliding with an Amish buggy in Centre Hastings.

Provincial police in Centre Hastings said that the buggy was heading south on Slab Street when it was struck by an eastbound pickup truck as it rounded a corner near Douglas Road at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The two passengers of the buggy were thrown off. Neither was hurt but the horse, spooked, got loose and fled eastbound on Slab Street and then north on Douglas Road.

It couldn’t be corralled and instead ran down Crookston Road where it collided with an eastbound van. The horse was dead at the scene and the van suffered front-end damage but the occupants weren’t hurt, according to police in the municipality about 200 km southwest of Ottawa

The driver of the pickup truck, a 49-year-old local man, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to share the road with the buggy, which was equipped with a flashing amber light that the religious community has adopted in order to see and be seen on the road.
