The City’s Community and Protective Services Committee today received the annual report of the Arts, Culture, Heritage and Recreation Advisory Committee.
Between April 2015 and September 2017, the Advisory Committee’s work focused on revitalizing the City’s recreation services. The Advisory Committee provided input on the Municipal Sports Strategy and around capital improvements to City-owned parks, recreation and cultural facilities. The annual report includes the Advisory Committee’s work plan for 2017 and 2018.
The Committee also received a one-year update on the Vehicle-for-Hire By-law, which reports that there has been a high rate of compliance by licensed private transportation companies.
In August, an agreement was executed with Uber Canada for a voluntary seven-cent per-trip surcharge for accessibility. The voluntary per-trip surcharge will be applied to all completed trips commencing October 4, 2016, when Uber became licensed. Based on trip data, the total amount for its first year is estimated at $450,000. Staff will consult with stakeholders to determine the use of the funds collected by the accessibility surcharge.
Staff do not recommend requiring in-vehicle cameras for private transportation companies because of the existing safety provisions of the by-law. With private transportation companies, rides are pre-arranged, cash payments are not allowed, and passengers and drivers are identified to one another and can be traced after the trip.
