Mayor Jim Watson opened an exhibit at the City Hall Art Gallery today, featuring the latest additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection. The exhibition, entitled Longevity: 2017 Additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection, is on display at the City Hall Art Gallery between November 16, 2017 and January 7, 2018.

The exhibition features 71 artworks representing 50 artists. Twenty-four of these artists are new to the Collection.

The exhibition title refers to the intentions behind collecting: acquisition, documentation, display, preservation, and conservation. It is also the name of an artwork by Donald Kwan, one of the pieces on display in the exhibit.

Facts

  • In 2017, 60 artworks by 41 artists were purchased, six artworks were donated and five site-specific permanent public art commissions were completed.
  • The City of Ottawa Art Collection is comprised of nearly 2,800 artworks created by over 760 artists.
  • Pieces from the City of Ottawa Art Collection are on display in over 150 public spaces across the city.
Quotes

“The City of Ottawa Art Collection forms a rich visual history of the region and is a legacy of immeasurable value that we are proud to display in over 150 public spaces across the city. Investing in our local arts community through City-run programming and funding encourages nationally and internationally recognized artists to make their homes in Ottawa.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa

“Artworks in the City of Ottawa Art Collection serve as meaningful records that help to define the cultural landscape of our region and are preserved for the enrichment of future generations. The artists featured in this exhibition represent a small fragment of a much larger visual arts community comprised of many talented local artists.”
