A beagle that suffered a gunshot wound last week is receiving life-saving care at the Ottawa Humane Society and should be available for adoption once it recovers in a couple of months.

The white-and-sandy-brown-coloured beagle — affectionately named Sadie Mae by OHS staff — was found wandering on a trail in Carp on Saturday evening by people who were driving on an ATV trail behind Hidden Lake.

Police rushed the eight-year-old dog to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital to be stabilized. The dog was transferred to the Ottawa Humane Society on the morning of Nov. 13.

The dog has extensive injuries to her skull, left eye and left ear. She is being treated with pain medication to keep her comfortable and is also receiving antibiotics, IV fluids and daily wound cleanings and bandage changes.

“She’s a sweet and stoic dog who, with surgery and intensive treatment, has a good chance at recovery,” said Dr. Shelley Hutchings, OHS chief veterinarian, in a release.

OHS said Sadie Mae is scheduled for extensive surgery to reconstruct her skull. It is likely that her left eye will need to be removed but vets are hoping to save her left ear.

Following surgery, she’ll spend at least eight weeks in the critical care unit at the OHS before being spayed and having dental work done. When she’s well enough, Sadie Mae will be ready to find a new home.

The humane society also released a video to introduce the wounded dog.

It is unknown whether the shooting was a hunting accident or intentional. So far no owner has come forward to claim Sadie Mae.
