A new era of healthy cooking and nutritious education began today at the Albion-Heatherington Recreation Centre where Mayor Jim Watson, Gloucester-Southgate Councillor Diane Deans and David McGuinty, Member of Parliament for Ottawa South, celebrated the completion of a new community kitchen.

The formal event was followed by a community party and cooking competition. The kitchen will be available for public rentals and recreation programming beginning January 1.

Nestled in the northwest corner of the existing community centre, the new kitchen is 94 square metres of space that can be used for a variety of activities. There is room for a dozen cooks at one time and includes:

  • three educational kitchen stations
  • one accessible workspace that doubles as a demonstration area
  • Seven moveable cooking stations that can each accommodate two cooks at the same time.

The addition is efficient in design making use of dimmable LED lighting and plenty of natural light entering from windows facing south and west.

Construction of the kitchen was made possible in part through funding by the Government of Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

In addition to the kitchen project, a handful of other rooms at the recreation centre were renovated to make them more accessible and functional, and a 93-square-metre multi-purpose room was added.
