Christmas is a time for giving. That means placing gifts under the tree or in the stockings hung with care by the fireplace. It’s also a time to share a holiday meal with loved ones. For families struggling to make ends meet, doing one may mean not doing the other. Buying a gift for a child, in order to bring a smile to their face and keep their faith alive, may mean there isn’t enough money left over for Christmas dinner.
For the 33rd year in a row, the OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive – the longest running and most successful food drive in Ottawa – will ensure more families and residents have food on their table this holiday season. Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Ottawa Food Bank, and it depends heavily on the donations received through the OC Transpo/Loblaw Annual Christmas Food Drive.
Every day, 14 tons of food leaves the Ottawa Food Bank's Michael Street warehouse. The Ottawa Food Bank provides 112 member agencies with supplies to feed 41,500 people each month, and 36 per cent of them are children.
This Saturday, December 2, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., OC Transpo buses will be parked outside participating Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer and No Frills stores across Ottawa. You can donate non-perishable food items to any of the volunteers helping out. Collected food items will then be delivered to the Ottawa Food Bank.
Cash donations will also be accepted. Since the Ottawa Food Bank obtains food in such large quantities and have amazing food industry partners and supporters, they are able to make your donation go further. This means that for every dollar donated, a total of $5 worth of food is delivered to the community. If you can't make it out on December 2, you can make an online donation to the 33rd OC Transpo/Loblaw Annual Christmas Food Drive at ottawafoodbank.ca/octranspo.
For more information on the food drive, including grocery store locations, please visit octranspo.com.
Help make the holiday a little brighter for those in need.
