A covered wooden bridge in Gatineau twice built lovingly by volunteers and both times destroyed by arson will be built again in 2018.
The Brabant-Philippe Bridge carried pedestrians and bicycles across the Rivière Blanche in the city’s east end. It’s the only crossing for a kilometre in either direction.
But the site is surrounded by trees and has no lighting, and twice the traditional red bridge has been burned under cover of night, first in 2011 and again, after a full reconstruction, in 2016.
Most of the past construction work was done by a volunteer group, the Corporation d’aménagement de la Rivière-Blanche.
It is volunteering again and says that in future the bridge will have security cameras operating all the time.
The city of Gatineau has pledged $265,000 for the project.
