The official first day of winter is Dec. 21 but Thursday is looking like a contender with slick and slow roads for the morning commute and blowing snow in the city’s west end.

Ottawa police was warning of black ice in spots.

The fire department reported just before 7 a.m. that they were on their way to a multiple-vehicle collision on the westbound Highway 417 at March Road and warned motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.

Minutes earlier, the OPP had warned that they were on their way to a single-vehicle crash on westbound Highway 417 just after Highway 416.
