In the season of giving, a local charity that collects clothing to support youth programs is reeling after six of their donation bins were stolen.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa’s purple drop boxes, used to collect gently used clothing and household items, were taken sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

The organization’s executive director says it’s not the first time the 1,000-pound boxes have been stolen from a charity, and says the thefts of the bins — worth $1,200 each — are not random.

“I think this is quite co-ordinated,” said Susan Ingram, who said bins were stolen from their sister locations in Gatineau in October. “And, for some reason, there is a type of bin they like. What they are doing with them I don’t know. Are they repainting them and using them somewhere else in Ontario? I don’t know.”

While she calls the thefts “disheartening,” she says clothing pickups were done Tuesday, so items donated on the weekend would have gone to the program.

Most of the items collected are sold by weight to a wholesaler and the proceeds go to support the BBBSO’s programs that help more than 1,000 youth in Ottawa build self-esteem and develop the coping skills they need to stay in school and succeed later in life. However, she says, some clothing items are saved for families in need.

Ingram says it will take four to eight weeks to replace the bins.

Of the 15 bins located around the city, six were stolen from five locations, including the Legion in Stittsville, the Georges Vanier and All Saints high schools in Kanata, and the St. Jerome and St. Francis Xavier high schools.

Ingram has filed a report with the Ottawa police, and security footage is being reviewed. She assumes there was more than one person involved in the thefts, given the weight of the bins and the number stolen.

“You would have to have a few people who could lift them … you’d need a big truck to fit them all … that’s a big effort they put into it last night. Someone must have seen something. So I am hoping someone saw something and they can call the police if they did have anything that they wanted to report.”

Anyone with information was asked to call the Ottawa police at 613-236-1222.
