Hydropothecary, the medical marijuana producer in Gatineau, has announced an expansion that will make it one of the largest growers in Canada.
The company has bought 78 acres of land next to its 65-acre rural property on the site of a former nursery in Masson-Angers.
It plans to build a one-million-square-foot greenhouse, and has the $80-million funding in place to do so, said a release from the company on Tuesday.
Hydropothecary is already a new greenhouse on its existing property and when the latest expansion is complete the company will have a 1.3 million square feet of space devoted to growing and manufacturing.
That would put Hydropothecary in the same league as Canadian market leaders such as Canopy Growth Corp. in Smiths Falls, the headquarters for several brands including Tweed Marijuana, and Aurora, which is now building an 800-square foot greenhouse at the Edmonton Airport.
Hydropothecary is already a major employer in the rural area of Masson-Angers about 40 kilometres northeast of Ottawa, with 98 staff. That will triple to more than 300 employees when the expansion is complete, according to the news release.
Construction is expected to be complete by December 2018.
There is room to expand even more on the acres of 78 acres of land purchased by the company.
Hydropothecary, like other producers licensed by Health Canada to grow cannabis for medical patients, is getting ready for the recreational market. The federal government has promised to make recreational pot legal across the country by July.
“Hydropothecary is boldly stepping forward to take the lead in the Canadian cannabis industry,” said Sebastien St-Louis, CEO and co-founder. “With our expansion, we are moving into industrial agri-nomics, robotic technology, fully automated systems and the cannabis plant as a THC bioreactor. Once legalization of the adult-use recreational market becomes a reality, Hydropothecary will be ready.”
The company prides itself on creating innovative products while abiding by all the restrictions surrounding medical marijuana. Producers are not allowed to sell edible forms of cannabis like cookies and candy, for example, just dried weed and oil.
Hydropothecary invented a form of dried cannabis powder that meets those restrictions while allowing patients to eat it.
The “decarb” weed has gone through a decarboxylate process to activate the chemical compounds, such as THC and CBD, but it does not need to be smoked or vaporized. Patients can sprinkle it on their food, mix it in a drink or take it by capsule. Medical marijuana companies are not allowed to sell the capsules stuffed with dried cannabis products, either, because that implies they are dictating the dose the patient must take. So Hydropothecary sells the decarb powder and gives patients capsule-making machines.
The company also developed an under-the tongue spray. Called Elixir, it tastes like peppermint.
Hydropothecary was the first medical cannabis grower in Quebec, receiving a license to grow in 2014.
By the numbers
108,000 kilograms: The amount of dried cannabis Hydropothecary will be able to produce annually after it completes the latest expansion plans
795,000 kilograms: The amount of cannabis that will be needed by both medical and recreational users in 2018, according to industry analyst Greg McLeish
