Algonquin College has refunded tuitions to 2,063 students who dropped out this semester because of the five-week faculty strike.
Of those students, 25 per cent said they were interested in starting their courses again in the winter semester, Algonquin president Cheryl Jensen said in a statement.
“Ontario’s colleges have always been committed to supporting those learners who didn’t feel they could complete their studies as a result of the work stoppage,” said the statement.
Ontario’s minister for post-secondary education, Deb Matthews, ordered the 24 colleges across the province to offer tuition refunds for students who dropped out of the fall semester because of the strike.
Algonquin College was unable to immediately provide information about how many students normally drop out during the fall semester.
Across the province, 10.3 per cent of college students received tuition refunds, according to preliminary numbers released by the province.
The strike by about 12,000 professors, part-time instructors, counsellors and librarians ended when the province passed back-to-work legislation in November.
Algonquin has shortened its winter break and extend the fall semester into January to make up for lost coursework.
