Mayor Jim Watson was to have his appendix removed on Wednesday night after experiencing “significant pain” following a council meeting, his chief of staff told council.

In an email to council and distributed to the press just before 8:30 p.m., Serge Arpin wrote that Watson was scheduled to have the operation at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.

Watson chaired a lengthy council meeting earlier in the day, with the highlight being the 2018 budget. Council approved the budget with a vote of 19-5 and Watson delivered his term promise of keeping annual property tax increases capped at two per cent.

The mayor will be away from city hall “for the next several days,” Arpin wrote.

Much of the formal business for 2017 is wrapped up at city hall. Council met for the last time this year on Wednesday.

The holiday season, however, is often packed with community events.

Watson will likely have to miss the Ottawa Senators-Montreal Canadiens outdoor game at TD Place on Saturday. It’s a signature Ottawa 2017 event that he asked the NHL to hold in celebrating the league’s 100th anniversary.
