Ottawa paramedics are crediting city hall security guards with giving a 50-year-old woman a fighting chance to survive a heart attack after she collapsed this morning.

According to paramedics, the woman was at city hall at around 9:30 a.m. when she suddenly fell in a bathroom on the first floor. Security personnel were notified and they immediately initiated CPR and applied an automatic external defibrillator (AED). The AED administered a shock and the security personnel continued CPR until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics took over the defibrillation attempts and then inserted an intravenous tube.

Medications were also used to help restart her heart. Within a few minutes, the woman’s heart restarted and paramedics inserted a tube into her lungs to support her breathing.

During transport, paramedics diagnosed a specific type of heart attack and redirected the patient directly to Heart Institute to undergo angioplasty.

She is currently in critical condition. Her identity was not released.

Paramedics say the early actions of city hall security personnel played a crucial role in the outcome of the incident.

Early recognition, CPR and the application of an AED were important actions in giving the woman a chance to survive long enough for paramedics to get her to hospital.
