A man who stabbed his common-law spouse in a “cocaine-induced psychotic episode” in the middle of their Carlington street in 2015 has pleading guilty to manslaughter.

In front of Superior Court Justice Lynn Ratushny, Gino Langevin pleaded guilty Thursday to fatally stabbing Gail Fawcett, his partner of nine years, in a brazen daylight attack in July 2015.

Though originally charged with first-degree murder, a prosecutor told the court that Langevin, under the influence of drugs, could not have formed the intent required for a murder conviction.

Langevin, a long-time cocaine addict, was in the throes of a binge in the days leading up to July 21, 2015. As previously reported by this newspaper, the day before the killing, Fawcett called paramedics with concerns that Langevin, then 45, had done too much cocaine.

His cocaine use continued into the next day. On the afternoon of July 21, Fawcett called 911 reporting that Langevin was standing beside her, having a “psychotic breakdown.” She repeatedly whispered to the dispatcher to “please hurry,” according to an agreed set of facts read out in court.

Fawcett told the dispatcher of Langevin’s recent attempts to stop using cocaine.

Gino Langevin, 45, appeared in court on Wednesday, July 22, 2015.

As a paramedic arrived at the couple’s home at 209 Anna Ave., Fawcett was outside in the street, and the paramedic recognized her from the day before. He saw Langevin move toward Fawcett with a knife in hand and yelled for her to run, before locking himself in the paramedic vehicle.

Langevin, still armed with the knife, approached the vehicle and began attacking it. Fawcett went after him and pleaded with him to stop. Langevin then chased her away from the vehicle and began stabbing her repeatedly. Afterwards, he took off her shorts, removed his clothing and leaned over her soon-to-be-lifeless body to kiss her.

The paramedic put the vehicle in drive and struck Langevin with the side mirror, then ordered him to the curb where he kicked the knife away from the attacker.

Additional paramedics and police arrived. Fawcett was taken to the Civic where she was pronounced dead.

Langevin, in an interview with a homicide detective after his arrest, admitted to stabbing Fawcett but could give no reason why.

Fawcett was originally from Sarnia, Ont., and was the mother of two adult sons. Her family attended the plea.

Defence lawyer Michael Smith has requested that a pre-sentence report and Gladue report be completed for his client.

Langevin is scheduled to be sentenced in 2018.
