Ottawa paramedics say they were delayed taking a crash victim to the hospital on Thursday because another motorist was tailgating the ambulance.

Paramedics treated a 26-year-old woman after a vehicle hit a tree along Highway 417 near Boundary Road just before 3:15 p.m.

The woman might have been ejected from the vehicle, paramedics said. They treated her for multiple injuries, including a fractured leg and injuries to her abdomen.

On Twitter, paramedics said they stabilized the woman on the way to the hospital, but a driver was tailgating the ambulance, delaying the time it took to get to the trauma centre.

The woman was in serious but stable condition, paramedics said.

Drivers shouldn’t follow an emergency vehicle that has its lights and sirens on, paramedics said.
