If Senators’ owner Eugene Melnyk was looking to shake the bushes with his veiled comments Friday night that he might consider moving the team, he got what he was looking for.
However, fans piled onto social media to offer a different solution: Keep the team, lose the owner.
On Saturday, less than one hour after if first appeared, the Twitter hashtag #MelnykOut was trending in Ottawa, used more than 100 times and counting.
It followed Melnyk’s statements Friday when he said that, while he’ll never sell the team, but he’d consider moving them if the financial picture got worse. He said the Senators’ revenues are already among the lowest in the league and attendance has been an issue of late at the Canadian Tire Centre.
“We’re not doing great, but we’re doing okay,” he said.
“If it becomes a disaster? Yes (the team could move). If you start not seeing crowds showing up, yes.”
“For now, we are on the cusp of doing okay.”
And the commenters ranged from regular fans to U.S. media superstar Keith Olbermann, who has almost 1.2 million Twitter followers and is a regular tormenter of U.S. President Donald Trump, via a GQ web series called “The Resistance.”
Typically, Olbermann, pulled no punches:

Fans took the owner to task for seeming to place the blame for the team’s failures on the fans.
