Easton man sentenced after rare child porn trial
Riley Yates Of The Morning Call

An Easton man who was caught downloading and sharing child pornography was sentenced Monday to four to 15 years in state prison after a rare trial in which jurors were forced to endure videos seized from his computer that showed young girls being raped.

“Those videos are vile and they are haunting,” Northampton County Judge Jennifer Sletvold told 76-year-old Weiwu Zhao. “Everyone who had to watch those will be haunted for the rest of their lives, I have no doubt about that.”

Sletvold handed down her sentence in a courtroom packed with supporters and detractors of Zhao, who has railed against the justice system in legal filings, claiming he is being framed and invoked racism against Asians. His backers bore fliers asserting his innocence, and in court called him a good man who would never do such a thing.

“Sir, you are not innocent and you are not a victim,” Sletvold told Zhao.

In November, it took a jury just 45 minutes of deliberations to find Zhao guilty of each of the four child pornography-related charges he faced.

He was accused in December 2015 after state police said an investigation linked his computer to child porn being distributed over an online file-sharing network. Investigators said they tracked a three-minute, 22-second video to Zhao’s computer, and later uncovered 13 other videos of child porn on it.

Child porn possession cases seldom go to trial, given the inflammatory nature of the images involved. The recordings moved several of Zhao’s jurors to tears, as prosecutors played snippets of them to the panel.

Sir, you are not innocent and you are not a victim.— Judge Jennifer Sletvold to Weiwu Zhao at his sentencing on child porn charges

Zhao represented himself at trial, having hired and fired three lawyers as his case wound through court. He hired a fourth attorney, Sandra Thompson, before Monday’s sentencing, with Thompson accusing Sletvold of having already “made up her mind” about Zhao’s punishment — drawing a rebuke from the judge, who several times cut her off.

To Sletvold, Zhao called himself “an old engineer” who has been kept from his scientific work by his conviction. That’s hurt him, his family and “the U.S. national interest,” Zhao said.

“I’ve never been interested in child pornography, [or] even pornography,” Zhao, a native of China, said through an interpreter.

Zhao’s wife, Xiuying Zhao, stood by her husband, as did his daughter, a neighbor and another man who befriended him.

“If you lock up such a good person in jail, that’s a huge loss to society,” his wife said.

Assistant District Attorney Laura Majewski said every time Zhao watched those videos, he was exploiting the children depicted in them. Majewski said Zhao showed no remorse and accepted no responsibility, claiming alternately it was the fault of the cable company, the police or the district attorney’s office.

“He’s blamed everyone else but himself,” Majewski said.

NAACP's support for Easton child porn convict doesn't sway judge

A retired Chinese engineer was sent to prison Monday for four to 15 years for downloading child pornography even though he steadfastly maintains his innocence and brought dozens of supporters to court Monday.

Weiwu Zhao, 76, of Easton, was convicted at trial earlier this year of downloading 14 videos of child pornography in 2014.

Zhao and his supporters told Northampton County Judge Jennifer Sletvold that he didn't understand the case against him because he doesn't speak English, that he was framed and that he needed more time to prepare before he was sentenced.

He went through three lawyers before deciding to represent himself at trial, claiming the three previous attorneys pressured him to take a plea deal.

Prior to the hearing, his daughter handed out leaflets at the Northampton County Courthouse urging bystanders to support an "innocent senior." She brought about 30 supporters, including Bethlehem NAACP Chapter President Esther Lee.

Lee said she has seen young black men wrongly convicted of crimes due to their difficulties with language and felt the judge should postpone the sentencing to allow Zhao's new attorney, Sandra Thompson, to familiarize herself with the case.

Sletvold, however, debunked each of Zhao's arguments. She said Zhao has been provided a Chinese interpreter for all of his legal proceedings. She said at least one of the downloaded videos was labeled in Chinese. State police experts said the videos couldn't have wound up on Zhao's computer by accident as he claimed, the judge said.

"You are not innocent and you are not a victim," the judge told Zhao.

Rather than admit to his conduct, he forced jurors to watch video after video of men molesting girls to form the basis of his conviction, Sletvold said. Those images will never leave the jurors, the judge said.

"Those videos are vile. They are haunting," she said.

Witness after witness described Zhao as a kind, gentle grandfather.

"He was handed a raw deal," said James Kain, his Easton neighbor.

"I want to tell everybody here my father is a good man," said his daughter, Qing Zhao.

Sletvold called Zhao a difficult man who refused to follow directions that didn't suit him. He was ordered to stay away from children while on bail, for instance, but brought one with him among his supporters during his trial, the judge said.

"He has no remorse for the crime or his victims," said Assistant District Attorney Laura Majewski. "He has blamed the cable company. He has blamed investigators. He has blamed my office. He has blamed everyone else but himself."

Zhao was convicted of two counts of sexual abuse of children and single counts of criminal use of a communication facility and receiving obscene materials.

He must report his address to authorities for 25 years after he is paroled under Pennsylvania's version of Megan's Law. That likely won't be an issue, though, since he is subject to deportation to China when he is paroled.
