At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held today, Councillor Jean Cloutier and community members celebrated the official opening of the Jim Tubman Chevrolet SENS RINK at the Canterbury Recreation Complex, along with project sponsors Jim Tubman Chevrolet, the Ottawa Senators Foundation and the Canterbury Community Association.
Children from École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Geneviève and Arch Street Public School then took to the ice with former Ottawa Senators player Chris Phillips for the rink’s first public skate. Also on hand was local artist Christopher Griffin, who created public art for the inside concrete wall of the rink. The artwork, called Along the Boards, features 12 stainless steel cut-out figures playing hockey.
Construction on the new multi-purpose, year-round outdoor covered refrigerated rink began in May 2017. The new rink will increase access to public skating during the four to five-month ice-in season. During the rest of the year, the rink will be used for ball hockey, basketball and lacrosse, as well as a range of community activities and events. There will be some final landscaping and pathway paving to put the finishing touches on the facility in the spring of 2018.
The Jim Tubman Chevrolet SENS RINK was funded through a combination of a special area levy, development charges and sponsorships. Jim Tubman Chevrolet’s sponsorship is part of the City of Ottawa’s Community Champions initiative, which provides businesses, community groups and public-spirited individuals to become community partners by sponsoring City programs, services and facilities.
