A late-night fire Thursday at the Shepherds of Good Hope on King Edward Avenue saw two people taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation, while two others were treated and released on the scene.

The fire, which originated in a mattress on the first floor at 256 King Edward Ave., broke out just before 11 p.m.

A 45-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were taken to the hospital and treated for non-critical respiratory problems.

Two people were injured in a mattress fire at the Shepherds of Good Hope mission in the Market area.

According to Ottawa Fire Services, the fire occurred in the dormitory of the Shepherds’ Hope Outreach Shelter for Women, a 54-bed emergency shelter for women and transgendered people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

During Thursday’s fire, OC Transpo provided buses to shelter residents.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage, meanwhile, are not yet known.
