Ontario Provincial Police officers stopped 3,500 commercial vehicles and laid 1,836 charges during a provincewide blitz focusing on catching distracted truck drivers.

The blitz, called “Operation Safe Trucking,” took place between Dec. 11 and 15.

OPP officers monitored commercial truck drivers while riding as passengers in transport trucks in various locations across the province. The height of the cab afforded the officers an improved vantage point and allowed them to catch 223 truck drivers who were charged with distracted driving.

OPP aircraft and sprinter vans were also used during the blitz to provide an enhanced view of aggressive truck drivers. Speeding accounted for 336 of the charges, 111 drivers were charged for following too closely and an additional 185 charges were laid for other moving violations.

A number of trucks were found to have defective equipment, accounting for 185 of the charges. Improper documentation saw the highest number of charges, with 537 drivers caught.

OPP officers and officials from the Ministry of Transportation conducted more than 600 hours of inspections as part of the blitz.

“(The operation results show) that more work needs to be done to reduce the serious public safety risks posed by some commercial motor vehicle drivers,” OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes in a release.

“As expected, our officers noted that the vast majority of (commercial) drivers were operating their trucks in a safe manner during this initiative.”
