Anyone who’s ever agonized over prepping one Christmas turkey for a few friends and family can only begin to imagine the madness in the Algonquin College School of Hospitality kitchens Saturday.
Dozens of staff and volunteers zoomed around the room in organized chaos putting the final touches for the annual Operation Big Turkey feast presented at seven local community centres.
In its 13th year, Operation Big Turkey will prepare some 2,500 dinners with all the trimmings. There’s also a vegetarian lasagna option, with no meat or dairy.
“Christmas can be a really hard time of year for people who have no one to share it with or who can’t make ends meet,” Chris Knight, a founding member of Big Turkey, said in a release. “Everyone is welcome to join and all you have to do is show up at any of the 7 locations. Our volunteers will seat you and then serve you a really good meal. Enjoy each other’s company and we’ll do the rest.”
