It’s cold in Ottawa. But Gatineau is just plain ridiculous.

Gatineau’s weather station reported that the air on the Quebec side of the river was colder than Ottawa’s air by an amazing 8.6 degrees on Wednesday morning.

At 8 a.m. it was -24.1 C in Ottawa and -32.7 C in Gatineau.

Both figures are pure temperature, without including wind chill. With the windchill, in Gatineau it felt like -40.

Each temperature is measured at its city’s airport. Gatineau’s airport is at a lower altitude, and close to the Ottawa River, which acts like a bowl to retain the cold, dense air near ground level. Ottawa’s airport is higher and farther from the river, so it escapes this effect.

On cold days, especially days without much wind, Gatineau is often a couple of degrees colder — but this big a gap is rare.

Gatineau did warm up a bit by 9 a.m. (all the way up to 29 C), but there was still a difference of nearly five degrees. Gatineau remained colder than Inukjuak and other communities along Hudson’s Bay.

Environment Canada has a cold weather warning posted for Gatineau. It says: “A period of very cold wind chills is expected. Extreme wind chill values of minus 35 or below are occurring this morning. Wind chills will moderate during daytime hours. However, tonight wind chill values are again expected to be minus 35 or below.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.”
