Two people returning to Ottawa from the Dominican Republic were arrested earlier this month when border guards spotted 10 rum bottles containing suspected liquid cocaine in their luggage, police say.
The pair arrived at the MacDonald-Cartier International Airport on Dec. 7. Canada Border Services Agency officers found the one-litre bottles during a secondary inspection, the RCMP said in a press release. A test of the liquid pointed to cocaine as did a detector dog.
The travelers were turned over to police.
Mercedez Greig, 22, and Gersi Mulollari, 23, were charged with importing cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Both were released ahead of a Jan. 2 court appearance.
