Environment Canada has issued an “extreme cold warning” and Ottawa Public Health has a frostbite warning in effect until further notice.

“A period of very cold wind chills is expected,” the weather agency warned, surprising no one with a face.

“Wind chills will moderate during daytime hours today. However, wind chill values between minus 30 and 35 are expected again tonight.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.”

Welcome to Ottawa’s windchilliest Dec. 28 in well over a century.

Most at risk from the cold are young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and the homeless, Environment Canada warned. Cold-related symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness and numb and discoloured fingers and toes.

The now-familiar tips include:

  • Dress warmly in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The top layer should stop wind.
  • Cover exposed skin – frostbite can develop within minutes.
  • Pack emergency supplies in the car such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
  • Keep pets indoors.
  • Working outside? Take regular breaks to warm up.

In case you’ve forgotten, so-called “normals” for this time of year are highs of -5 C and lows of -14 C.
