A burning Christmas tree caused extensive damage in a Gatineau apartment late Thursday night but no one was injured.
The fire broke out about 11:30 p.m. in a unit of a triplex at 1434 Maloney Blvd. E., south of the Gatineau Airport. Firefighters arrived to find the occupants outside and the apartment filled with “thick smoke and intense heat.”
The Christmas tree was the source of the fire.
The Gatineau fire department asks people to turn off the Christmas lights on a tree before going to bed or going out, and to keep the tree stand full of water.
Damage is estimated at $120,000. Occupants of the building’s two other units were able to return to their apartments.
