Winter is upon us and the cold is here to last, with double-digit negative temperatures forecast for the next week. Is there a bright side to any of this? Not really. But we offer the tiniest of silver linings! To accompany this cold snap, we’re running a short-term daily feature: Cold Facts.
Canada’s coldest city is actually a tie between Saskatoon and Regina, which have each recorded -50 C. Both records were set long ago: Saskatoon on Feb. 1, 1893, and Regina on Jan. 1, 1885, respectively. The coldest in recent history was when Sherbrooke recorded -41.2 C on Jan. 15, 2004. (Note: Some small communities have been colder, but we’re dealing with cities here. Snag, Yukon, holds the overall record from 1947 with a ridiculous single-day low of -62.8 C.)
This is all temperature data, not wind chill.
