New Year’s Eve revellers may want to ring in 2018 under a warm blanket.

The cross-Canada cold snap is expected to continue into the new year, with Environment Canada issuing a new extreme cold warning for the City of Ottawa, saying they expect a “multi-day episode of very cold wind chills.”

The weather service issues warnings when extreme cold or wind chill creates an elevated risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Meteorologists say “a fresh surge of Arctic air is encompassing the entire province in its icy grip… 2017 is about to end on a very cold note.”

Winds are expected to be light, but the extreme cold will still produce windchill temperatures below minus-35 Sunday morning, and again later tonight during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

A Canada 150 celebration on Parliament Hill, along with many outdoor events across the city, have already been cancelled due to extreme cold.

The national weather service cautioned New Year’s Eve revellers the temperatures are expected to dip back below minus-35 late this evening.

The cold snap will likely persist into New Year’s Day and potentially into Tuesday before moderating somewhat, with flurries and a high of minus-13 expected Wednesday. It will be a brief reprieve, however, with temperatures plunging back into a deep freeze later in the week.

With a forecast low of minus-28, Dec. 31 is expected to be the coldest New Year’s Eve on record in the city since 1934, according to local weather historian Rolf Campbell.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” Environment Canada warns.

The weather service urged those who venture outdoors to cover up, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

People are urged to check on older family, friends and neighbours, and to be mindful of pets.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” the weather service stated.

The OPP also issued a reminder to motorists to drive according to the conditions.

The Ottawa International Airport, while not experiencing any major delays, also issued a heads up Saturday morning.
