Ottawa firefighters used snowmobiles and a drone to help some ATV riders who went through the ice on a pond west of Shirleys Bay.

The snowmobiles were needed to get close to Mud Pond, which is in a wooded area near Cameron Harvey Drive and March Valley Road.

Crews responded at 3:45 p.m. after receiving reports that three men on ATVs were in distress after going through ice on the pond, more than one metre deep in places.

Firefighters reached the scene and found that everyone was safe. One disabled child with limited mobility required help in being removed from the area.

No injures were reported.
