You complained and the National Capital Commission heard.

After a couple of weeks of public impatience that the record-setting low temperatures weren’t enough to get the world’s largest skating rink in shape, dignitaries gathered at the Fifth Avenue entrance Friday morning to post the green flag on five kilometres of skating between the Bronson rest area and the Pretoria Bridge (Hawthorne Avenue), including Dows Lake.

The NCC’s Skateway team will open the remaining 2.8 kilometres of ice as conditions warrant. They offered no guesstimate of when that might be.

In its 48th season, the Skateway receives, on average, close to one million visits annually, with an average of 20,000 visits daily.

Quinn Rozario and his son, Andy, from Barrie, Ont., were among the first skaters on the Rideau Canal Skateway when it opened Friday morning. It was the first time skating on the canal for both.
