The National Capital Commission opened a key stretch of the Rideau Canal Skateway Sunday — extending the Skateway from the National Arts Centre to Dows Lake — just in time for the deep freeze to loosen its grip on the city.

Temperatures are expected to hit a relatively balmy -10 C on Sunday after days of temperatures in the minus 20s and gusty winds, which made it feel like the minus 30s.

The warming trend will continue all week with -1 C on Monday — just as children return to school after a frigid holiday — and freezing rain forecast for later in the week.

The canal is listed as fair to good in some spots, but very good in the section between Pretoria and Fifth Avenue.

Seven kilometres of the Skateway is now open. The final .8 kilometre, between Dows Lake and Carleton University, remains closed.
