Ottawa police have issued a second warning after receiving more than 10 reports about a man posing as an Uber driver and sexually assaulting women, especially in the ByWard Market.
The warning, issued Tuesday, says the man has offered a lift to women he sees leaving bars and restaurants and who appear to be intoxicated. The driver has reportedly sexually assaulted his victims once they are in his car.
The suspect also steals the victims’ debt and credit cards and PIN numbers, which he uses later to defraud them. In some cases, the cards are stolen and in others the suspect tricks or coerces the victim into divulging financial information.
Police did not issue a description of the suspect because they believe there might be more than one person pulling off the same scam.
The reports are similar to a warning sent out on Dec. 20, but police say it’s unknown if the incidents are linked.
A real Uber ride is can only be summoned by and is billed directly through the Uber app; there’s no need to pay with cash, credit or debit card.
Anyone with information about these or similar incidents is asked to contact Ottawa police at 613-236-1222, ext. 5760. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
