Five people lost their home but escaped to safety with their pets after a fire destroyed their Navan-area home early Wednesday morning.

Damage is estimated at $700,000.

The residents had called 911 at 12:21 a.m. to report visible flames at 4408 Sarsfield Rd.

Fire destroyed a Navan home early Wednesday

The family, taking their pets, had already fled to safety at a neighbour’s home when fire crews arrived and began fighting the flames at the large, two-storey house.

Police shut down the roadway north of the fire scene while paramedics, Hydro One and the Salvation Army arrived to help.

Just before 5 a.m., the fire department reported that crews were still working to extinguish the fire and that the house was a “total loss.” A fire investigator was on the scene.
