If you didn’t lace up the skates and get out on the Rideau Canal Skateway this week, you’ve missed your opportunity to skate virtually the entire distance — at least for now.
Three days after opening a section that pushed the total ice available to seven kilometres (of the Skateway’s 7.8-km length), the National Capital Commission announced that the ice surface would be closed as of 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
“Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide serious deterioration of the ice surface,” a news release stated.
The Skateway would be closed “from Rideau Street (National Arts Centre) to Dows Lake because of adverse weather conditions and their negative impact on the ice,” the NCC said.
By midnight, the temperature was expected to creep up to 1 C and reach a high of 7 on Thursday, with periods of rain. There’s hope that the closure might be brief, however. By Saturday, the high was to be -10, with a forecast high of -15 both Sunday and Monday.
The Skateway’s 48th season officially kicked off Friday.
