Ottawa awoke to a record-setting 10 C, slushy roads and a thick blanket of fog in some areas.
But things are going to change – and fast– with a flash freeze then heavy snow on the way, Environment Canada warns in not one but two alerts for the national capital area.
Lots of fog in outlying areas. Distance between the vehicle in front of you is your friend. When I came in, some spots were foggy enough to lose sight of the vehicle tail lights in front of you.

First there’s a flash freeze warning as the temperature is expected to plummet to -4 C by afternoon turning ponding water, slush and rain on sidewalks and untreated roads into into skating rinks.
Ottawa and Gatineau are asking residents to help clear out street grates ahead of the possible flash freeze.

Then sprinkle on fresh snow. A special weather statement advises that the rain will switch to snow this evening, that should continue into Saturday morning with the region the likely northwest edge of a major winter storm. Depending on its track, Ottawa can expect five cm to 14 cm of white stuff, blustery winds and frigid temperatures.
Ottawa school buses are running but buses for Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario students. Schools remain open.
Friday’s forecast is for fog patches to clear up in the morning then periods of rain change to periods of snow in the afternoon with a risk of freezing rain during the switchover. Southerly winds at 20 km/h should change to northwest winds at 30 gusting to 50 near noon as the mercury plunges.
Snow, at times heavy and blowing, is expected through Friday night with a risk of freezing rain early in the evening, gusty winds and a low of -15 C.
This tweet from Edmonton police on taking care in tricky road conditions applies to the capital as well.
70 property damage collision reports in 4 hrs. #yeg is not a level in Mario Kart. Our roads are not race tracks. There is no winner. And if you slip off the road, a Koopa won’t lift your vehicle and put you back on track within seconds. It’s about safety, patience, and planning.

It should clear up by about noon Saturday, when there’s a forecast high of -13 C that will feel more like -26 with the wind. That’s also the actual overnight low.
Sunday is forecast to be sunny and -16 C with a low of of -21 C.
For Monday, expect a mix of sun and cloud with a 30 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -13 C.
