La Maison Conroy, which served gourmet fare in Gatineau’s Aylmer sector and employed one of the Ottawa area’s noted young chefs, has closed about a year after it opened.

In the kitchen at La Maison Conroy, which opened in December 2016 in a large, handsome, historic stone building on Aylmer’s main street, was chef Kyle Mortimer-Proulx. After cooking vegan dishes at ZenKitchen in Chinatown and then meaty fare at the Lowertown Brewery in the ByWard Market, Mortimer-Proulx made the jump to La Maison Conroy, where he served steaks and tartare made with dry-aged beef, Iberico pork from Spain, a delicious rabbit gnocchi and more.

On Friday, Mortimer-Proulx confirmed that La Maison Conroy and Le Maçon, the pub downstairs from the restaurant, closed effective this week. “The business was simply not sustainable in the Aylmer market,” Mortimer-Proulx said.

Last November, Mortimer-Proulx represented La Maison Conroy when he competed at Ottawa’s Gold Medal Plates competition. He said he will take some time off and travel a bit following his time at La Maison Conroy. “I’ll get back into a kitchen full-time when the right opportunity presents itself,” he said.

The closure in Aylmer comes on the heels of the closure of Salt Dining Lounge, a similarly posh and ambitious restaurant, on Preston Street. That business, which opened in 2014, sent notices to its employees on Dec. 27 that the business wouldn’t be open any longer.

Salt’s chef, Ryan Edwards, had competed in the 2014 edition of Gold Medal Plates, in which leading local chefs square off in a lavish fundraiser for Canada’s Olympians.
