The president of the University of Ottawa issued a statement Wednesday informing the public that a student had died at a school residence and asked that the public respect the family’s privacy.

Jacques Frémont extended his condolences on behalf of the school. He did not reveal the student’s identity, nor the circumstances that led to the student’s death.

“It is with profound sadness and deep regret that I must inform you that a student has passed away in one of our residences,” Frémont wrote in the statement. “Our first thoughts go out to the student’s family, to whom we offer our sincerest condolences. We also grieve with those closest to this student, including roommates, friends, classmates and professors who were in contact with this person during their time on campus.”

Frémont also asked that the public keep the family, friends and colleagues of the student in mind when communicating through social media.
