A family safely escaped smoke and flames in their South Keys-area home Friday morning, and Ottawa Fire Services is asking motorists to avoid the area.

Firefighters were called to the home on Southgate Road near Johnson Road at 8:02 a.m. Occupants noticed smoke on the main floor of the two-story attached home, then called back to report flames.

Crews declared a working fire and were able to get inside the house for a “quick” attack aimed at preventing its spread.

By 8:25 a.m., OFS reported that the fire was under control, crews were checking the attic and adjacent house for flames and a fire investigator was en route to determine the cause.

Ottawa Fire Services issued an “urgent” message for motorists to avoid the area, warning that “driving through a fire scene is dangerous.”

URGENT UPDATE: Motorists are asked to avoid the area and not access Southgate Road. Driving through a fire scene is dangerous. Find an alternate route and avoid the area. Thank you for your cooperation and patience #otttraffic #ottnews pic.twitter.com/AjJsIaI2lr
