The University of Ottawa Health Services is saying little about the case of a family doctor accused of surreptitiously videotaping a young woman during a medical exam.
“In the wake of very serious charges filed against one of our family physicians, we are taking all
measures to fulfill our professional and legal obligations while ensuring that our patients, staff and
providers are supported at this difficult time and that the public is appropriately informed,” according to an unattributed statement it issued Friday afternoon.
“Most importantly, we wish to express on behalf of all staff and providers at UOHS, our heartfelt concern and support for the patient directly involved.”
The statement came a day after police announced they had laid charges of sexual assault and voyeurism against Dr. Vincent Nadon, 56, of Chelsea, Que.
UOHS didn’t address questions posed by this newspaper, including whether it has informed Nadon’s former patients of the charges, whether it has launched its own investigation of the doctor and what reassurance it can offer that patients are safe from being videotaped.
According to Ottawa police, “investigators are concerned that there could be other victims.”
The sexual assault and child abuse unit received a complaint from a woman in her 20s earlier this week after she saw Nadon at the UOHS clinic at 316 Rideau St. During the examination, she became suspicious that she was being secretly filmed, police said.
UOHS said in its statement that patients registered with Nadon can still go to their walk-in clinic at 100 Marie Curie Private and will be informed of arrangements being made for their ongoing care. It asked that media respect the “privacy” of its patients, staff and providers.
Nadon, who went to medical school at the University of Ottawa and has been licensed to practice medicine since 1986, was scheduled to appear in court again Friday.
White-haired, wearing a red sweater, his hands clasped and cuffed in front of him, a weary-looking Nadon had said nothing in court as he appeared by video link late Thursday afternoon. His lawyer declined to comment.
Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 613-236-1222, ext. 5944.
