An overnight fire that destroyed a New Edinburgh house under construction and seriously damaged the duplex next door is under investigation.
Firefighters were called to shortly before 11:30 p.m. to respond to a report of a fire in a house under construction on the corner of Queen Victoria Street and River Lane. Based on the description and the number of calls from the neighbourhood, the blaze was declared a working fire while firefighters were enroute.
Shortly after firefighters arrived, they discovered that the flames had spread to the neighbouring house, a side-by-side duplex. The fire destroyed the house under construction and seriously damaged both units of the duplex.
The fire was declared under control at around 3:10 a.m. Saturday morning and there was no more damage after 3:45 a.m.
No one was injured. However, the duplex sustained extensive fire and water damage. The occupant of one unit of the duplex and the three occupants of the second unit have not been able to return to their homes, said Platoon Chief Dean Taylor. Damages are estimated at $300,000 for the house under construction and $850,000 for the duplex.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
