Buckle up for slick roads on Monday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning that the Ottawa area is likely in for a “significant freezing rain event” on Monday night into Tuesday morning with several millimetres of accumulation. “Roads will likely become slippery, initially due to some snow followed by a layer of freezing rain,” said the forecasting agency.

The weather statement covers much of Ontario including Eastern Ontario and the Toronto area north to the regions around Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie as well as much of the southern portion of Quebec east into parts of Labrador and Newfoundland.

The cause of the predicted chaos is a deepening Colorado low forecast to cross the lower Great Lakes, according to Environment Canada. “Snow is forecast to spread across portions of Eastern Ontario later on Monday. This will likely change to freezing rain Monday night and persist into Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, temperatures in Ottawa are expected to drop to a low of -5 C on Saturday night and a high of 2 C on Sunday followed by -7 C overnight. There will be a chance of snow Monday with a high of -7 C before the freezing rain swoops in.

Freezing rain warnings will likely be issued as the event approaches, said Environment Canada.
