Customers who filled up at the Ultramar station in Prescott last week are facing hundreds of dollars in repair bills after pumping diesel into their vehicles instead of regular gas.

Ultramar says it will compensate its customers for the damage to their vehicles, according to Ultramar spokesman Pierre Tessier. He didn’t know how many vehicles were affected.

The problem occurred after an Ultramar delivery tanker mistakenly filled regular unleaded tanks with diesel on the evening of Jan. 18, Tessier said.

Tessier said “as soon as we were made aware of the situation, the site was shut down. The tank has been drained, cleaned and refilled with gasoline.”

But unhappy customers offered a different timeline, saying they filled their vehicles with the diesel on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Chantal Crate of Prescott filled up her 2013 Toyota Highlander at Ultramar at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 16.

The next morning her SUV was running rough and there was a strange smell from her engine, but she dropped her daughter off at school and drove to work in Brockville anyway, she said. Her car was hard to start after work, and it stalled before she could get out of the parking lot. Her Toyota stalled six more times before Crate got to her mother’s place in Brockville, not trusting the SUV to get her back to Prescott.

Crate said she contacted Toyota service and a mechanic said it was the second call he had received that day about a similar problem. The mechanic suspected diesel in the gas tank.

The cost of the repair was $545, including the cost of the tow but not the cost of her gas, she said.

When Crate contacted the station, she said employees admitted the problem, and Crate was told to bring in all her receipts and that Ultramar would compensate her in full.

Karen Hoare, of Augusta Township, tells a similar story. She filled up her van at the Ultramar in Prescott during the afternoon Jan. 17. Her gas tank had been about a quarter-full.

Her Dodge Caravan ran okay on her 20-minute trip home, but on Thursday morning it was hard starting, quickly revved and stalled, she said.

When she contacted the Ultramar station, the staffers were “excellent,” she said. They admitted that the station’s gas tanks had been mistakenly filled with diesel and told her to save her receipts and that Ultramar would reimburse her in full.

Her car was towed to her mechanic and Hoare was told it would be a big job taking several days. Her gas tank would have to be removed and sent away. The sensors in her van might be damaged, she was told. She was waiting for an estimate on Monday.

Hoare said she phoned and emailed Ultramar’s head office but had not received a response.

“I think the local station handled it well; I just hope that head office will follow through with what’s been promised,” she said.

Tessier said affected customers should give their information to the Prescott station and “Ultramar will compensate customers for the damage caused by this situation.”

Tessier said customers with questions should call the Ultramar customer centre at 1-800-363-6949.

The manager of the Ultramar station, which is the first gas station on the turnoff to Prescott from the 401, said she had been ordered to say “no comment” by Ultramar head office.

Matt Rogerson, a licensed mechanic who owns Matt’s Garage in Brockville, said diesel in gasoline-powered cars can cause big problems.

The gas tank would have to be drained and there might be internal troubles with the engine, he said.

Normally, a gas engine wouldn’t start on diesel, depending on how much gas was in the car when the tank was filled, he said.

A mechanic might not to think of looking for diesel in the tank because the problem didn’t happen often, he said. At gas pumps, diesel nozzles are larger so they can’t easily fit into gasoline-powered cars.
