Quebec police have deployed a mobile task force in the Gatineau region in response to increased criminal activity in the Ottawa area.

Sûreté du Québec director of communications Guy Lapointe said the number of shootings and homicides in the past month, along with the re-emergence of the Hells Angels in Carlsbad Springs motivated the deployment.

“Everybody’s aware of what’s going on across the bridge,” Lapointe said.

The task force is comprised of investigators, intelligence officers and patrol officers trained in dealing with organized crime.

“As soon as violence occurs” with gang activity, Lapointe said Quebec police will move quickly to prevent further incidents from occurring.

The deployment is partly a tactic in increasing public visibility to deter criminal activity. Much like how Hells Angels wear patches to make their presence known, Lapointe said, “We’re going to show our colours.”

Lapointe also said the deployment is an opportunity to support and educate local forces, and stresses their presence has nothing to do with the local police’s current handling of the situation, nor is it directly related to the Saturday shooting outside the Club Pigale strip club.

“We want to support local forces,” he said.

Mariane Leduc, communications officer for Gatineau police, said, in response to the provincial reinforcements, “We’re using all the tools at our disposal.”
