A “temporary” closure of the Rideau Canal Skateway turned out to be a matter of hours with skaters back out there Sunday.
Cédric Pelletier, a spokesman for the NCC, said that Saturday wasn’t as wet and sunny as expected and it was cool enough overnight to refreeze the ice surface.
Crews were out checking the ice by 6 a.m. Sunday and deemed it safe for skating. Rougher sections were swept.
“It’s great news,” Pelletier said, adding that crews work round-the-clock to keep the skateway open under what have been “tricky” weather conditions.
Get out while you can though – the ice will likely soften by Sunday afternoon with a forecast high of 1 C and a bit of sunshine.
The canal was closed on Saturday at 11 p.m. with the National Capital Commission reporting that the warm, wet weather would erode the ice surface.
The commission tweeted Sunday morning that the entire 7.8 km length had reopened to skaters. According to the NCC, experts with a dedicated ice safety committee assess the ice thickness before opening the skateway.
Conditions are just “fair,” however, according to the skateway website.
The NCC warns that skaters should use caution especially under the bridges where there is some water accumulation and notes that “the ice surface is bumpy and rough.”

The #RideauCanal Skateway will close temporarily tomorrow, Jan.27, 11pm as expected conditions with the current weather forecast will erode the ice surface. The closure will help preserve the ice to reopen the Skateway as soon as possible. https://t.co/UHuYOLadl0 #Ottawa #ottnews pic.twitter.com/UVWstrUZrx
