Ottawa’s snow cover is at a near-record low for late January but the forecast promises plenty of white stuff with up to eight cm expected over the next two days.

For Tuesday, Environment Canada predicted periods of snow totalling two to four cm to start in early morning and end in the afternoon.

Northwest winds pick up in early afternoon with a high of -8 C then become light as the mercury drops to -19 C.

For Wednesday, periods of snow adding up to another two to four cm are expected to begin by late morning and southeasterly winds pick up in the afternoon with a high of -5 C that forecasters say will feel like a chilly -26. Overnight, expect periods of snow and a low of -6 C.

Rolf Campbell, who explores Ottawa’s weather history on Twitter as @YOW_Weather, said Monday that the eight cm of snow cover lost in melts over the weekend brought Ottawa within seven cm of the shallowest snow levels ever recorded on Jan. 29.
