A 19-year-old who was arrested Monday after someone threatened an armed attack on Garneau High School in Orléans has been released unconditionally after an investigation showed his email account was hacked.
Parents were sent a message early Monday morning asking them to keep their children at home because the safety of staff and students could be at stake. Buses were cancelled for the French-language Catholic school on rue Carrière in Orléans.
Police say the young man, who was arrested shortly after the incident, was a victim of “swatting.”
“His email was hacked by somebody else that was sending the email to make a swatting threat,” said Const. Chuck Benoît.
Swatting is the practice of sending false threats via email or other means to draw large numbers of emergency responders to a scene.
“So he was a victim of this incident by just having his email used in terms of the threat.”
Benoît said police continue to investigate the threat and the source of the email.
