Residents will get a first glimpse this week of how a new Ottawa Hospital Civic campus might be situated on the eastern edge of the Central Experimental Farm.
The new $2-billion-plus hospital, replacing the current Civic campus at Carling and Parkdale avenues, is not expected to be complete until 2026, but public engagement and planning are both underway.
A draft architectural concept of the new hospital will be part of an update on planning for the hospital, which will take place at the Horticulture Building in Lansdowne Park Wednesday evening. The public information session is scheduled from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
The hospital said the draft architectural concept “will demonstrate the landscape influences behind how the buildings could be placed on the Sir John Carling site.”
The site includes Experimental Farm land west of Carling Avenue and Preston Street and includes the site of the former Sir John Carling building, which was demolished. Land at the site includes a ridge, which could play a role in design and location of the structure.
The hospital will also provide information about what hospital services are planned for the new campus.
During public engagement sessions held across the city last year, the hospital heard concerns about the new campus’s impact on greenspace as well as parking.
Earlier, The Ottawa Hospital said it required 3,400 parking spaces on the site, adding that surface parking costs a fraction of parking structures – a cost that the province does not pay.
The hospital now says it is planning to build underground parking on the site.
Other issues raised during the public information sessions include:

Other issues raised during the public information sessions include:
- Ensuring parking is adequate and accessible, but not an eyesore;
- Making the site more than a hospital by including community and recreation options;
- Clarifying how the hospital would affect local traffic, especially in the nearby residential community;
- The Ottawa Hospital will host a public information session to present an update on hospital services planned for the new campus and the background journey to an architectural design concept.
