A Toronto-area gymnastics coach who once worked in Ottawa is facing several sex-related offences after a teenaged girl he was coaching came forward with allegations of sexual assault.
Earlier this year, investigators from the Peel Regional Police special victims unit were contacted by a 15-year-old girl from the Region of Peel. The girl reported several sex-related incidents that allegedly occurred between her and her gymnastics coach over a four-year period.
On Jan. 26, a Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued for 28-year-old Scott McFarlane.
On Monday, McFarlane turned himself into Peel police and was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, child luring – child luring under 16 years old and make sexual explicit material available to a person under 16 years of age.
Police say McFarlane was an gymnastic coach in the Region of Peel and has also coached in Oakville, Ottawa, and in Western Canada. He has been suspended indefinitely by Gymnastics Ontario.
Police believe that there may be more victims and/or witnesses and are asking anyone who had contact with McFarlane to contact the Peel Regional Police Special Victims Unit at 905-453-2121, ext. 3460. Anonymous information may also be submitted by calling Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca or by sending a text message to CRIMES (274637) with the word “PEEL” and then your tip.
