Don’t realize how dumb it is to take your eyes off the road to take video of a crash on your cellphone?

Here’s a clue: Leeds County OPP has issued “a plea” for drivers to stop filming collisions from behind the wheel.

When OPP officers were tackling a chain-reaction crash involving four cars and seven tractor-trailers on Highway 401 west of Mallorytown Wednesday, “numerous eastbound drivers were observed by officers videotaping the collision using cellphones as they drove past.”

Insp. Mike Francis, the commander in the detachment about 100 km southwest of Ottawa, sounded stern.

“I do not expect that while we are dealing with a collision that we would have other motorists risking their lives on the other side of the highway by not concentrating on the road ahead of them,” he said. “Not only is it illegal but their actions could have caused another serious collision.”

The OPP reminded drivers that the minimum fine upon conviction for distracted driving is $490 and three demerit points.

Highway 401 was closed for five hours Wednesday after the crash.

One of the motorists involved, a 23-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a truck as he stood outside his vehicle.
